India’s Copper Deficit Is Growing. Here Is What That Means for Buyers.

India was once a net exporter of copper cathodes. That has changed.

Copper imports climbed from ₹22,856 crore in FY17 to more than ₹1.03 trillion in FY26 — an increase of over 350%.
The country that once exported refined copper now imports approximately 500,000 tonnes annually to meet domestic demand. indiaseatradenews

This is not a temporary disruption. It is a structural shift, and every buyer sourcing copper in India needs to understand what it means for their supply chain.

What is driving the gap

India’s refined copper production currently stands at around 555,000 tonnes per year, falling short of domestic consumption, which exceeds 750,000 tonnes. The shortfall is imported. indiaseatradenews

On the demand side, India plans to reach 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030 and is taking rapid strides toward its target of 30% EV market share by the same year. Both goals are copper-intensive. According to Goldman Sachs, a standard electric vehicle contains nearly four times the copper of an internal combustion engine. The International Copper Alliance estimates that renewable power generators use 8 to 12 times more copper than traditional generators. indiaseatradenewsindiaseatradenews

The demand trajectory is clear. Supply is not keeping pace.

What does this mean for copper prices?

Copper prices in India today stand at ₹1,426 per kg — up from ₹1,188 per kg in January 2026. The refined copper market is expected to remain in deficit in 2026 as supply growth continues to lag demand. Tight supply, rising demand, and a global market already under pressure from mine-side disruptions mean prices are unlikely to soften significantly in the near term. bankbazaaricra

For buyers, this has a direct implication: procurement decisions made today are being made in a market that will remain firm.

What buyers should do?

In a supply-constrained market, the quality of your sourcing partner matters more than ever. A buyer who secures a reliable, grade-verified supply of copper — cathode, ingot, or millberry to LME and ISRI standards — is better positioned than one chasing spot availability.

At San Bal Ispat, we supply copper to industrial buyers across India and internationally, graded to LME Grade A and ISRI BERRY / BARLEY classification, with complete documentation on every trade. In a market where supply is tight, we exist to give serious buyers a source they can count on.
